A five-round non-championship bout between Nate Diaz and Leon Edwards is scheduled to take place at UFC’s May 15th pay-per-view event, per a report from Ariel Helwani of ESPN.
The fight joins UFC 262, which is set to happen at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA.
The return of Diaz, a polarizing figure in the sport, comes over a year after his last appearance in the cage. Diaz previously fought in the main event of UFC 244 in late 2019, battling Jorge Masvidal for a “BMF Championship.”
The fight saw Masvidal put on a strong performance that concluded unceremoniously in the third round due to a doctor stoppage.
Diaz’s last win was in August of 2019, where he fought to a decision win against Anthony Pettis. Prior fights in Diaz’s career go quite farther back, with his two other recent performances being bouts against Conor McGregor in 2016.
He now fights Edwards, who is one of the welterweight contenders that are in the conversation for a title shot.
Edwards made his return to action in March, fighting Belal Muhammad in the main event of a UFC “Fight Night” card. The headlining fight had an abrupt ending in the second round as an unintentional eye poke to Muhammad forced the bout to end in a no contest.
Before the no contest fight, Edwards had an impressive eight-fight win streak from 2016 to 2019. He had been out of action for all of 2020 as numerous fights fell through for various reasons.
The fight will be the first time in UFC history that a non-title fight that is scheduled for five rounds happens in the co-main event of the card. The standards for the promotion in the past meant that five-round fights were reserved for either the main event of a show or any championship fight in the lineup.
The main event of UFC 262 is currently set to be a fight between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship.
Here is the updated lineup:
Bout 10: Charles Oliveira (30-8) vs. Michael Chandler (22-5) (Vacant UFC Lightweight Championship)
