UFC’s May 8th event has lost its originally scheduled main event, as injury has forced TJ Dillashaw out of a fight against Cory Sandhagen. News of the cancelled bout was first reported by Carlos Contreras Legaspi and later confirmed by Dillashaw publicly.
Dillashaw posted a graphic image on Instagram, stating that a cut around his right eyebrow has taken him out of his fight.
“I’m sad to say that I have to be pulled from my fight on May 8th due to a cut received from a head butt while drilling,” said Dillashaw. “Rescheduling the fight as soon as possible.”
The matchup was set to be Dillashaw’s return to the cage after serving a two-year U.S. Anti-Doping Agency suspension. Now, reports are saying Dillashaw’s fight against Sandhagen will happen at a later date.
The plan is now to promote a strawweight fight between Michelle Waterson and Marina Rodriguez up to the main event spot for the UFC “Fight Night” card, per a report from Damon Martin and Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.
The strawweight matchup is not official as of yet. It is not known if the main event would be booked for the usual five rounds of a main event if it is finalized.
Waterson snapped a two-fight skid in her last appearance, taking a close split decision over Angela Hill after a five-round fight in September of 2020.
Rodriguez stopped the momentum of Amanda Ribas early this year, finishing her in the second round of their fight with strikes.
