UFC’s May 1st “Fight Night” prelims have lost a bout, as a featherweight matchup between Gabriel Benitez and Jonathan Pearce has been scrapped.
The fight was removed from the card after Benitez missed weight for his featherweight bout, coming in four-and-a-half pounds over the non-championship limit, per MMA Junkie.
The fight was set to happen at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Pearce addressed the cancelled bout through social media.
“I did my part by showing up and making weight and I won’t reward him by accepting a fight and giving away any advantage,” said Pearce on Instagram. “I’m trying to be smart about my career, and I hope to be back in the cage soon.”
Benitez was looking to drop back down to featherweight after competing as a lightweight twice last year.
The fight was set to be the third UFC appearance for Pearce. He scored his first win in the promotion late last year, defeating Kai Kamaka III with strikes.
UFC’s card on Saturday night now has 11 fights in total scheduled to happen. The main event is currently set to be a light heavyweight clash between Jiri Prochazka and two-time title challenger Dominick Reyes.
