The next fight for former UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt could be a bout against Rani Yahya on July 9th. The pairing is in the process of being made, per a report from Damon Martin of MMA Fighting.
If the matchup can be finalized, it would join a “Fight Night” card that doesn’t have a confirmed location at the moment.
The potential booking gives Garbrandt a chance to end a slump he has found himself in for numerous years. The 30-year-old has produced just one win through six appearances since TJ Dillashaw ended his title reign in 2017.
Garbrandt’s last fight was an unsuccessful attempt to compete down at flyweight. In that appearance late last year, Kai Kara-France scored a first-round finish win against him.
Yahya picked up two wins in 2021, albeit against low-level competition at bantamweight. The veteran started the year with a submission win against Ray Rodriguez. Later that year, he went the distance against Kang Kyung-ho for a decision victory.
UFC’s July 9th show doesn’t have a main event confirmed for it just yet. Here are the fights that have been reported for the card thus far:
Bout 5: Cynthia Calvillo (9-4-1) vs. Nina Nunes (10-7) (Flyweight)
Bout 4: Antonina Shevchenko (9-4) vs. Cortney Casey (10-9) (Flyweight)
Bout 3: Abdul Razak Alhassan (11-5) vs. Jamie Pickett (13-7) (Middleweight)
Bout 2: Caio Borralho (11-1) vs. Armen Petrosyan (7-1) (Middleweight)
Bout 1: Rani Yahya (28-10-1) vs. Cody Garbrandt (12-5) (Bantamweight)
