Sean O’Malley could get another big test in his next booking, as UFC is aiming to match him against Pedro Munhoz for their July 2nd pay-per-view event.
News of the potential matchup was reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN on Tuesday night. Should the fight be confirmed, it will join a card that is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The matchup provides O’Malley another tough challenge in his climb up the bantamweight division. The flashy striker picked up his third consecutive finish win in December 2021, earning a first-round stoppage against Raulian Paiva.
Munhoz is currently ranked 10th in UFC’s official flyweight standings, placing him three spots above O’Malley. This means that a win for O’Malley would likely put him numerous spots up the 135-pound ranks.
Munhoz is currently on a two-fight losing streak, albeit against some of the top names in the bantamweight division. He went the distance in both of his losses last year, dropping bouts against Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz.
UFC 276 doesn’t have a main event set for it currently. Here are the bouts that have been reported for the card thus far:
Bout 6: Miesha Tate (19-8) vs. Lauren Murphy (15-5) (Flyweight)
Bout 5: Brad Tavares (19-6) vs. Dricus Du Plessis (16-2) (Middleweight)
Bout 4: Jessica Eye (15-10) vs. Maycee Barber (10-2) (Flyweight)
Bout 3: Robbie Lawler (29-15) vs. Bryan Barberena (17-8) (Welterweight)
